Description
Multiple die failures converge on a single working die in SKH-1c-2021-57, a 2021 Philadelphia Lincoln Shield Cent that exhibits not only the characteristic obverse spike protruding from Lincoln's head but also a reverse die crack by the letter O and a die chip above the letter U. The reverse anomalies, noted with black arrow indicators in cataloging documentation, transform this from a simple spiked head into a multi-error die preserving evidence of progressive deterioration across both faces. Lyndall Bass designed the union shield reverse that has appeared on Lincoln Cents since 2010, and the shield's intricate detail creates numerous stress points where cracks and chips can initiate. The obverse spike follows the familiar pattern: a die crack enters the portrait area and transfers as a raised metallic projection extending from Lincoln's bust.
