Description

Fundamentally different from a standard doubled die, this 2021-D Lincoln Shield Cent carries doubling on the working hub itself — designated WWHO for Wexler Working Hub Obverse. Because the hub transfers its image to every working die produced from it, hub doubling means multiple dies carry the same doubled image, potentially affecting a much larger population of struck coins than any single doubled die. The doubling shows above the vertical stripes on the shield design, where the secondary hub impression left visible traces. Attributed by Mel F. Haynes and cross-referenced as Wexler 2021-D 1-cent WWHO-001, this is the first cataloged working hub obverse variety for the 2021-D cent. Reverse die markers include three small die gouges below the IB in PLURIBUS. No significant obverse die markers were noted. The distinction between hub and die doubling is critical: a doubled die affects only coins from one die, but a doubled hub affects every die made from that hub, giving WWHO-001 potentially broader production impact. The Shield Cent design, introduced in 2010, features a Union shield continuing through current production. Reverse: Three small die gouges can be found below the IB in PLURIBUS in PLURIBUS.Submitted By: Mel F.
