Description

A rotated die error on the 2020 Philadelphia Jefferson nickel, RTD-001 displays a counterclockwise die rotation of approximately 30 to 45 degrees, so the reverse sits that far from its normal orientation relative to the obverse. On a properly aligned coin, flipping the piece along its vertical axis should show the reverse right-side up; on this rotated die example, the reverse appears visibly tilted. Rotated die errors occur when one die (typically the reverse or "hammer" die) becomes loose in its holder and shifts position during the striking process. A rotation of 30 to 45 degrees can be seen with the naked eye, without magnification. The 2020 Philadelphia Jefferson nickel was produced at the main Mint facility with a substantial mintage typical of modern circulation coinage.
