Description

The 2019 Thomas Jefferson "1801" silver matte finish medal continues the U.S. Mint's Presidential Silver Medal Program with the third President. Jefferson's inauguration in 1801 marked the first transfer of power between opposing political parties in American history — the "Revolution of 1800" that peacefully shifted government from the Federalists to the Democratic-Republicans. Jefferson served two terms through 1809, during which the Louisiana Purchase doubled the nation's territory, the Lewis and Clark Expedition mapped the western frontier, and American trade expanded dramatically despite constant threats from the Barbary pirates and European belligerents. Thomas Jefferson (1743-1826) was the principal author of the Declaration of Independence, the first Secretary of State, the second Vice President, and the founder of the University of Virginia. His vision of an agrarian republic governed by an educated citizenry shaped American political philosophy for generations. He was also a polymath whose interests encompassed architecture, archaeology, botany, invention, linguistics, and philosophy — President Kennedy famously told a gathering of Nobel Prize winners that they were "the most extraordinary collection of talent ever gathered at the White House, with the possible exception of when Thomas Jefferson dined alone." The .999 fine silver matte finish medal captures Jefferson's distinctive profile in the elegant style that has characterized his numismatic portraits since the first Jefferson nickel in 1938.
