Description
The 2019 James Monroe "1817" silver matte finish medal honors the fifth President as part of the U.S. Mint's Presidential Silver Medal Program. Monroe's inauguration in 1817 launched the "Era of Good Feelings," a period of relative political harmony following the collapse of the Federalist Party. Monroe served two terms through 1825, winning re-election in 1820 with every electoral vote except one — cast by a New Hampshire elector who reportedly wanted Washington to remain the only unanimously elected president. Monroe's presidency is best remembered for the Monroe Doctrine, announced in his 1823 annual message to Congress, which declared the Western Hemisphere closed to further European colonization and established a principle that shaped American foreign policy for two centuries. His administration also oversaw the acquisition of Florida from Spain through the Adams-Onis Treaty of 1819, the Missouri Compromise of 1820 that temporarily resolved the slavery question in new territories, and continued westward expansion. James Monroe (1758-1831) was the last president who was a Revolutionary War veteran, having crossed the Delaware with Washington and been wounded at the Battle of Trenton. He served as a senator, governor of Virginia, minister to France and Britain, Secretary of State, and Secretary of War — often holding the last two positions simultaneously during the War of 1812. The .999 fine silver matte finish medal preserves Monroe's likeness in the dignified style appropriate to the last of the "Virginia Dynasty" presidents.
