Description
The 2019 James Madison "1809" silver matte finish medal honors the fourth President of the United States as part of the Presidential Silver Medal Program. Madison's inauguration in 1809 brought to the presidency the man most responsible for the constitutional framework of the American government. Often called the "Father of the Constitution," Madison was the principal architect of the document at the 1787 Philadelphia Convention, co-authored The Federalist Papers with Alexander Hamilton and John Jay to secure its ratification, and then drafted the Bill of Rights as a member of the First Congress. Madison served two terms through 1817, a presidency dominated by the War of 1812 against Great Britain. The conflict tested every institution Madison had helped create, and while the burning of Washington in August 1814 represented a low point, Andrew Jackson's victory at New Orleans and the Treaty of Ghent's restoration of prewar boundaries allowed Madison to leave office with his reputation enhanced. The war's conclusion inaugurated the "Era of Good Feelings" and confirmed American sovereignty in the eyes of European powers. James Madison (1751-1836) was the smallest president at approximately 5 feet 4 inches and 100 pounds, but his intellectual stature was immense. His wife Dolley Madison became the model for the role of First Lady, and her rescue of Gilbert Stuart's Washington portrait from the burning White House became one of the most celebrated acts in American history. The silver matte finish medal captures Madison's scholarly demeanor.
