Description
The 2019 John Quincy Adams "1825" silver matte finish medal honors the sixth President of the United States in the Presidential Silver Medal Program. Adams, the son of President John Adams, remains the only president whose father also held the office until George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush. His 1824 election was decided by the House of Representatives after no candidate secured an Electoral College majority, and Speaker Henry Clay's support for Adams over Andrew Jackson — followed by Adams's appointment of Clay as Secretary of State — provoked charges of a "corrupt bargain" that haunted his single term. Despite the political cloud over his election, Adams pursued an ambitious program of internal improvements including roads, canals, a national university, and a national astronomical observatory. Congress, dominated by Jacksonian opposition, blocked most of his proposals. After losing the 1828 rematch to Jackson, Adams did something unprecedented: he returned to public life as a member of the House of Representatives, serving nine terms from 1831 until his death in 1848. In Congress, he became the foremost opponent of slavery's expansion, fighting the "gag rule" that suppressed anti-slavery petitions, and successfully argued the Amistad case before the Supreme Court. John Quincy Adams (1767-1848) was arguably the most intellectually accomplished president, fluent in seven languages and a distinguished diplomat. The silver matte finish medal honors both his presidency and his extraordinary post-presidential career.
