2019 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-002

Description

Attributed by the Wexler Team as 2019-P 25¢ TX WDDR-002, this doubled die reverse variety was struck at the Philadelphia Mint on a 2019 Texas San Antonio Missions America the Beautiful quarter. The ATB quarter program, running from 2010 through 2021, featured national parks and sites from each state and territory, with the Texas release depicting the San Antonio Missions, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The quarter was struck in standard clad composition with a copper core bonded to outer layers of 75% copper and 25% nickel, weighing 5.67 grams with a 24.3 mm diameter. The doubling on this variety is described as very minor, showing at the southeast quadrant intersection of the design. Despite the subtlety, obverse die markers are extensive and useful for attribution: a weak east-west die scratch through the E in QUARTER, many thin northeast-southwest die scratches through DOLLAR, a die gouge inside the Q in QUARTER at the upper right, and a die gouge below the lower bar of the F in OF. The reverse shows heavy die damage at the bottom right serif of the cross depicted in the San Antonio Missions design, along with northeast-southwest die cracks on the top left corner of the arches with the bell. These reverse die damage indicators suggest the die experienced significant deterioration during its service life. The San Antonio Missions reverse was designed by Joseph Menna and depicts the arched facade of one of the mission structures, with a cross and bell as prominent design elements. While the doubling itself is minor, the extensive die markers and the interesting reverse design make this a variety worth pursuing for ATB quarter specialists building comprehensive die variety collections.
