Description

Completing the WDDO-002 attribution cluster for 2019-P America the Beautiful quarters, this entry documents significant extra thickness on the RTY of LIBERTY alongside severe die deterioration doubling on QUARTER DOLLAR — hallmarks of a very late die state obverse that the Wexler Team classified as VLDS. The reverse exhibits no significant die markers. The editorial history associated with this variety includes a now-corrected photographic swap in Wexler's Coin World column where images intended for WDDO-002 were accidentally replaced with photos of a 2001-P North Carolina quarter showing die deterioration doubling. Multiple entries sharing this WDDO-002 designation across different 2019 ATB quarter reverse designs illustrate an important principle in modern coinage die variety study: the United States Mint's use of standardized obverse dies across quarterly-changing reverse designs means a single obverse hub doubling event can appear on coins bearing entirely different reverse imagery. Flanagan's Washington portrait obverse, virtually unchanged since 1932, creates continuity across the ATB program's annual five-design rotation, and any obverse die defect established during hub-to-die transfer will replicate on every coin struck from that die regardless of which national park or site reverse is mated with it. Collectors interested in this variety should focus authentication on the RTY portion of LIBERTY rather than the QUARTER DOLLAR deterioration, as the former represents the cataloged hub doubling while the latter is a secondary effect of extended die service. Wexler Variety ID: 2019-P 25¢ NMI WDDO-002 remains the primary reference, with no CONECA or other attribution system cross-listings currently recorded.
