Description

Cataloged by Cuds on Coins with the date notation 12/02/2020 and no additional cross-references, the CU-25c-2018P-03(CI) is a rim cud variety found on the 2018-P Cumberland Island National Seashore Quarter from the America the Beautiful series. A cud is a major die break occurring at the rim where a piece of the die physically breaks away, leaving a raised featureless blob of metal at the edge of the struck coin — essentially an area where the planchet metal flows freely into the void left by the missing die fragment. The America the Beautiful Quarter is struck in cupronickel-clad composition at 5.67 grams and 24.3 mm diameter. The Cumberland Island design, sculpted by Phebe Hemphill, depicts a snowy egret on the Georgia barrier island's shoreline. The (CI) designation in the catalog number identifies this as the Cumberland Island issue, while the 03 indicates it is the third documented cud for this particular date and mintmark combination. Rim cuds vary considerably in size and location, and their collectibility often depends on the prominence of the die break — larger cuds that intrude significantly into the design field command higher premiums among error collectors.
