CU-25c-2018P-02(CI) Rim Cud
Error
Description
Cataloged by Cuds on Coins, the CU-25c-2018P-02(CI) is a rim cud error found on the 2018 Philadelphia-minted Cumberland Island National Seashore Quarter from the America the Beautiful Quarters program (2010-2021). A cud is a major die break occurring at the rim where a piece of the die steel fractures and separates, leaving a void in the die face. When a planchet is struck by a die with a cud break, the area where the die piece was missing produces a raised, featureless blob of metal at the coin's edge — the characteristic cud appearance. The quarter was struck in cupronickel-clad copper at 5.67 grams and 24.3 mm diameter. Cross-reference documentation indicates Stage B with additional notation for Cumberland Island National Historic Site dated 01/27/2023. The Cumberland Island reverse, designed by Chris Costello, depicts a snowy egret on a beach with maritime forest in the background, celebrating the largest of Georgia's barrier islands. Cuds are among the most visually dramatic die errors because they create an unmistakable physical anomaly at the rim that is immediately apparent without magnification. The stage designation indicates this die continued in service after the initial break, and specimens from different die stages may show varying sizes of the cud as the break potentially expanded during continued use of the deteriorating die.
