PC-25c-2018P-01 Pre-Cud
Error
Description
Documented on an America the Beautiful quarter honoring Apostle Islands National Lakeshore in Wisconsin, this pre-cud preserves the developing crack that would eventually become a full cud — the precursor stage where the die rim has fractured but the broken piece has not yet separated. When the fragment eventually breaks away, the resulting cavity fills with metal during striking to produce the raised featureless mass characteristic of a full cud. Pre-cuds capture the fracture in progress, showing the crack line across the rim before catastrophic separation occurs. PC-25c-2018P-01 is the first documented pre-cud for the 2018 Philadelphia Mint Apostle Islands quarter, cataloged by Cuds on Coins. The America the Beautiful quarter series (2010-2021) featured five new reverse designs annually, and the high production volumes ensured that die stress and rim fractures remained a regular occurrence. Modern clad quarters are struck at enormous speed, and the mechanical forces generate stress concentrations at the die rim where fractures typically initiate. The Apostle Islands design depicts sea caves along the Lake Superior shoreline.
