Description
The 2017 (S) Proof Ellis Island NP-Silver Quarter is a proof quarter struck at the San Francisco Mint, part of the America the Beautiful Quarters 2010-2021 series. The U.S. Mint produced 466,711 examples, making this ranked 6th of 30 mint variants by mintage, with less than 1% of production. The obverse features George Washington facing left, based on a 1786 bust by Jean-Antoine Houdon and the reverse displays unique designs featuring national parks and sites from each state and territory. The reverse depicts an immigrant family approaching Ellis Island with the hospital building in the background. Ellis Island processed over 12 million immigrants from 1892 to 1954 who came seeking a new life in America. Effigy Mounds (IA), Frederick Douglass (DC), Ozark Riverways (MO), Ellis Island (NJ), and George Rogers Clark (IN) were honored. Frederick Douglass was the first non-site coin, honoring the abolitionist at his Washington D.C. historic site. As a proof issue, this coin was struck multiple times on specially prepared polished planchets using polished dies, producing mirror-like fields and frosted design elements prized by collectors. Struck at the San Francisco Mint, established during the California Gold Rush and now primarily producing proof and collector coins. Auction record: $154 PR69DCAM 03-29-2018 eBay. Struck in 90% silver, 10% copper, weighing 6.3 grams, 24.3 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #627858.
