Description

The 2017 (P) Effigy Mounds National Monument Quarter is a quarter from the Philadelphia Mint, belonging to the America the Beautiful Quarters 2010-2021 series. The Philadelphia Mint struck 271,200,000 Effigy Mounds quarters dated 2017. The obverse features George Washington facing left, based on a 1786 bust by Jean-Antoine Houdon and the reverse displays unique designs featuring national parks and sites from each state and territory. The reverse depicts an aerial view of the Marching Bear Group, a procession of bear-shaped and bird-shaped earthen mounds. Effigy Mounds preserves more than 200 prehistoric mounds built by Indigenous Woodland cultures over 1,000 years ago. Effigy Mounds (IA), Frederick Douglass (DC), Ozark Riverways (MO), Ellis Island (NJ), and George Rogers Clark (IN) were honored.
