Description
The 2017 (S) Effigy Mounds National Park Quarter is a quarter produced at the San Francisco Mint as part of the America the Beautiful Quarters 2010-2021 series. The U.S. Mint produced 919,620 examples, making this ranked 5th of 15 mint variants by mintage, with less than 1% of production. The obverse features George Washington facing left, based on a 1786 bust by Jean-Antoine Houdon and the reverse displays unique designs featuring national parks and sites from each state and territory. The reverse depicts an aerial view of the Marching Bear Group, a procession of bear-shaped and bird-shaped earthen mounds. Effigy Mounds preserves more than 200 prehistoric mounds built by Indigenous Woodland cultures over 1,000 years ago. Effigy Mounds (IA), Frederick Douglass (DC), Ozark Riverways (MO), Ellis Island (NJ), and George Rogers Clark (IN) were honored. Frederick Douglass was the first non-site coin, honoring the abolitionist at his Washington D.C. historic site. Struck at the San Francisco Mint, established during the California Gold Rush and now primarily producing proof and collector coins. Estimated market value ranges from $0 to $4 depending on grade and condition. Struck in 75% copper, 25% nickel over a pure copper center, weighing 5.67 grams, 24.3 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #621703.
