2017 (P) Lincoln Shield Cent - UFO Variety WUFO-001

Description

2017-P WUFO-001 is a variety on the 2017-P Lincoln Shield cent that the Wexler team files as a UFO variety. On this coin, the shield's leftmost vertical bar continues downward until it enters the N of ONE at its top. Wexler notes no significant obverse markers. On the reverse, the lower part of that bar and the area right around it look heavily abraded. Kenneth D. Swaim submitted the variety. Wexler lists no cross-references. Wexler's comments say the extension of the bar into the N is clearly there, but question whether it is a doubled die, because of the apparent abrasion on the lower bar and on the extension itself. Wexler suggests two possibilities: a tilted-hub doubled die that was noticed, then abraded in an attempt to remove the stray hubbing; or a counterclash whose traces Mint die workers set out to remove. Wexler adds that it looks too good to be only a die gouge.

• None known Comments: This 2017-P cent is quite intriguing. There certainly is an extension of the left most vertical bar of the shield down into the top of the N in ONE. But is it a doubled die??? The one aspect of the extension that worries me is the apparent die abrasions on the lower part of that vertical bar and the extension south. It could be a doubled die from a tilted hub that was detected and then the abrasion took place to try to eliminate the errant hubbing.
