Description

The 2017 (P) Burnished George Rogers Clark National Park 5 oz Silver Quarter was struck at the Philadelphia Mint as a quarter in the 5 oz. America the Beautiful Silver Quarters 2010 to Date series. The obverse features George Washington facing left, based on a 1786 bust by Jean-Antoine Houdon and the reverse displays unique designs featuring national parks and sites — struck in 5 ounces of .999 fine silver at a massive 76.2mm diameter. The reverse depicts Colonel Clark and his frontiersmen wading through flooded bottomlands approaching Fort Sackville. The 1779 capture of Fort Sackville was a daring campaign that secured the Northwest Territory for the young United States. A modern issue from an era of rotating coin designs, collector-focused programs, and renewed interest in numismatic artistry.
