2017 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-030

Description

Submitted by George W. Powell Jr. and cataloged by the Wexler Team as 2017-P 25-cent DC WDDR-030, this Philadelphia Mint America the Beautiful Quarter features the Frederick Douglass National Historic Site reverse. The doubling appears under the window ledge of the first window and under the left shutter of the second window on the right side of the house — design elements specific to the Frederick Douglass quarter reverse depicting the Cedar Hill estate in Washington, D.C. where the renowned abolitionist, writer, and statesman lived from 1877 until his death in 1895. A minor obverse die marker accompanies this variety: a small die chip on the base of the bust north of the T in QUARTER. No significant reverse markers beyond the doubling itself have been noted. Cross-references list no known attributions outside the Wexler system. The Frederick Douglass Quarter was the third release of 2017 in the America the Beautiful series, designed by Thomas Hipschen with sculpting by Phebe Hemphill. Struck in copper-nickel clad composition (91.67% copper, 8.33% nickel bonded to a pure copper core) at 5.67 grams on 24.3mm planchets, collectors should examine the first and second windows on the right side of the house under 7x magnification for secondary impressions beneath the ledge and shutter areas.
