Description

Nearing the top of the Wexler catalog for this issue, WDDR-028 is the twenty-eighth doubled die reverse attributed for the 2017 Philadelphia Frederick Douglass National Historic Site quarter. The America the Beautiful reverse design features Douglass seated in his Cedar Hill study with PEOPLE'S RIGHTS on the podium, and this particular die pair carries its own unique combination of die markers that the Wexler Team documented for authentication purposes. The concentration of so many DDR varieties on a single quarter design reflects both the high production volume at Philadelphia and the fine detail of the engraving, which captures subtle hub displacement that might go undetected on simpler designs. Frederick Douglass's Cedar Hill home, located in southeast Washington, D.C., became a National Historic Site in 1988, and the quarter issued in his honor has since become one of the most variety-rich coins in the ATB series. Collectors working through the Frederick Douglass DDR catalog should photograph die markers at consistent magnification to build a reliable comparison library for attributing individual specimens.
