2017 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-013
Error
Description
Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 2017-P 25-cent DC WDDR-013, this doubled die reverse on the 2017 Frederick Douglass National Historic Site quarter from the America the Beautiful series displays subtle but diagnostically significant doubling concentrated on the architectural elements of the design. Slight doubling appears in the lower middle of the first window on the right side of the house, with additional doubling visible to the right of that same lower first window. These localized displacements on the building's fenestration are best confirmed under 10x magnification with directional lighting from the left. Two obverse die stages have been documented: Stage A carries very thin northwest-to-southeast die scratches through the E in LIBERTY, while Stage B develops a large die chip far to the left of the upper J in the designer's initials. On the reverse, Stage A shows no significant markers, and Stage B mirrors Stage A. No cross-references to CONECA or Cherrypickers have been established for this variety. The 2017 ATB quarter was struck at the Philadelphia Mint on copper-nickel clad planchets weighing 5.67 grams with a diameter of 24.26 mm. The Frederick Douglass quarter, designed by Thomas Hipschen and sculpted by Phebe Hemphill, depicts the historic site in Washington, D.C., where the famed abolitionist lived. The window-focused doubling pattern on this variety rewards patient examination, as the secondary lines within the architectural details can be mistaken for design elements unless compared against a normal strike.
