2017 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-006

Description

Anacostia, the Washington, D.C. neighborhood where Frederick Douglass made his final home at Cedar Hill, became a National Historical Site in 1988 and was selected as the District of Columbia's representative in the America the Beautiful quarter program. This sixth cataloged DDR for the issue reflects ongoing die variety discoveries that made the Frederick Douglass quarter one of the most studied ATB releases. Hub misalignment during the multiple impressions required to sink a working die created the doubling documented under Wexler Variety ID 2017-P 25c DC WDDR-006, as attributed by the Wexler Team. The modern hubbing process typically requires multiple impressions, and any shift between them produces a doubled die. The Philadelphia Mint struck these quarters on standard clad planchets, and high die consumption rates — each pair typically striking tens of thousands of coins — mean that even a small percentage of flawed hubbings can generate a substantial variety catalog over a full production run.
