2017 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001
ErrorDescription
Carrying the primary WDDO designation for the 2017-P New Jersey America the Beautiful quarter, WDDO-001 exhibits extra thickness on the letters of IN GOD WE TRUST on John Flanagan's Washington quarter obverse. The Wexler Team documented a distinctive reverse-side diagnostic: a die chip on the base of the bust north of the T in QUARTER, while the reverse itself shows no significant markers — note that the die chip appears on the obverse die but in the area near the QUARTER DOLLAR inscription along the lower rim. The 2017-P New Jersey quarter honored Crossroads of the Revolution National Historical Park, with the reverse designed by Robert Scot featuring Washington and Continental Army soldiers crossing the Delaware River. Philadelphia struck the New Jersey design as part of the five-quarter annual rotation in the America the Beautiful program (2010-2021). As WDDO-001, this represents the first and presumably most significant obverse doubled die documented for the 2017-P New Jersey issue, establishing the benchmark variety for the date-mint-design combination. Extra thickness on IN GOD WE TRUST indicates the secondary hub impression landed very close to the primary position, thickening the letter strokes rather than producing clearly separated secondary images — a doubling class that requires comparison against known normal examples to confirm. The die chip diagnostic near the T in QUARTER provides a crucial secondary identification point that is independent of the doubling itself, allowing collectors to first confirm they are examining the correct die before evaluating the more subtle extra thickness on the motto.
