Description

The 2017 (D) Native American Dollar - Position A, struck at the Denver Mint, is part of the Sacagawea & Native American Dollars 2000 to Date collection. The U.S. Mint reported 1.5 million 2017-D Native American dollars as a whole, without separating the Position A and Position B edges, so how many show this orientation is unknown. The obverse features Sacagawea carrying her infant son, Jean Baptiste Charbonneau, on her back; the reverse changes every year to honor a Native American contribution. The 2017 Native American Dollar honors Sequoyah, the Cherokee scholar who single-handedly created the Cherokee syllabary, enabling Cherokee literacy and the first Native American newspaper. Denver's mint evolved from a frontier assay office into one of the nation's primary coin production facilities, opening in 1906. Estimated market value ranges from $1 to $6 depending on grade and condition. Struck in manganese brass (77% copper, 12% zinc, 7% manganese, 4% nickel) bonded to a pure copper core, weighing 8.1 grams, 26.5 mm in diameter, with a lettered edge. Cataloged as PCGS #623098.
