Description

The 2016 (S) Proof Shawnee National Forest Quarter is a proof quarter struck at the San Francisco Mint, part of the America the Beautiful Quarters 2010-2021 series. The San Francisco Mint struck 660,215 clad proof Shawnee quarters dated 2016. The obverse features George Washington facing left, based on a 1786 bust by Jean-Antoine Houdon and the reverse displays unique designs featuring national parks and sites from each state and territory. The reverse depicts Camel Rock with native vegetation and a red-tailed hawk. Shawnee National Forest encompasses over 280,000 acres featuring dramatic sandstone bluffs and the unique Garden of the Gods wilderness area. Shawnee (IL), Cumberland Gap (KY), Harpers Ferry (WV), Theodore Roosevelt (ND), and Fort Moultrie (SC) were released. The Harpers Ferry design depicting John Brown's Fort was historically significant. As a proof issue, this coin was struck multiple times on specially prepared polished planchets using polished dies, producing mirror-like fields and frosted design elements prized by collectors. Struck at the San Francisco Mint, established during the California Gold Rush and now primarily producing proof and collector coins. Estimated market value ranges from $0.25 to $26 depending on grade and condition. Struck in 75% copper, 25% nickel over a pure copper center, weighing 5.67 grams, 24.3 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #593760.
