A quarter from the Denver Mint, the 2016 (D) Cumberland Gap National Historical Park Quarter belongs to the America the Beautiful Quarters 2010-2021 series. The Denver Mint struck 223,200,000 Cumberland Gap quarters dated 2016. The obverse features George Washington facing left, based on a 1786 bust by Jean-Antoine Houdon and the reverse displays unique designs featuring national parks and sites from each state and territory. The reverse depicts a frontiersman gazing westward through the historic natural passage. Cumberland Gap served as the primary gateway for westward migration, with an estimated 200,000 to 300,000 settlers passing through before 1810. Shawnee (IL), Cumberland Gap (KY), Harpers Ferry (WV), Theodore Roosevelt (ND), and Fort Moultrie (SC) were released. The Harpers Ferry design depicting John Brown's Fort was historically significant. Denver's mint evolved from a frontier assay office into one of the nation's primary coin production facilities, opening in 1906.
