Description

The 2016 (S) Proof Fort Moultrie National Park Silver Quarter is a proof quarter struck at the San Francisco Mint, part of the America the Beautiful Quarters 2010-2021 series. The U.S. Mint produced 479,657 examples, making this the lowest mintage among 25 mint variants, representing only less than 1% of total production. The obverse features George Washington facing left, based on a 1786 bust by Jean-Antoine Houdon and the reverse displays unique designs featuring national parks and sites from each state and territory. The reverse depicts Sergeant William Jasper returning the regimental flag to the fort's palmetto-log ramparts during battle. Fort Moultrie marks the site of the first decisive American victory of the Revolutionary War in 1776. Shawnee (IL), Cumberland Gap (KY), Harpers Ferry (WV), Theodore Roosevelt (ND), and Fort Moultrie (SC) were released. The Harpers Ferry design depicting John Brown's Fort was historically significant. As a proof issue, this coin was struck multiple times on specially prepared polished planchets using polished dies, producing mirror-like fields and frosted design elements prized by collectors. Struck at the San Francisco Mint, established during the California Gold Rush and now primarily producing proof and collector coins. Estimated market value ranges from $0 to $26 depending on grade and condition. Struck in 90% silver, 10% copper, weighing 6.3 grams, 24.3 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #597064.
