Description

The 2016 (S) Cumberland Gap National Park Quarter is a quarter produced at the San Francisco Mint as part of the America the Beautiful Quarters 2010-2021 series. The U.S. Mint produced 975,220 examples, making this ranked 2nd of 15 mint variants by mintage, with less than 1% of production. The obverse features George Washington facing left, based on a 1786 bust by Jean-Antoine Houdon and the reverse displays unique designs featuring national parks and sites from each state and territory. The reverse depicts a frontiersman gazing westward through the historic natural passage. Cumberland Gap served as the primary gateway for westward migration, with over 300,000 settlers passing through on their way to Kentucky and Tennessee. Shawnee (IL), Cumberland Gap (KY), Harpers Ferry (WV), Theodore Roosevelt (ND), and Fort Moultrie (SC) were released. The Harpers Ferry design depicting John Brown's Fort was historically significant. Struck at the San Francisco Mint, established during the California Gold Rush and now primarily producing proof and collector coins. Estimated market value ranges from $0 to $4 depending on grade and condition. Struck in 75% copper, 25% nickel over a pure copper center, weighing 5.67 grams, 24.3 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #597037.
