Description

Extensively cross-referenced as CONECA 1-O-VI, Cherrypickers FS-01-2014-101, and Wexler 2014 1c WDDO-002, this doubled die obverse on the 2014 Philadelphia Lincoln Shield Cent ranks among the most significant modern cent varieties, with its Cherrypickers FS designation marking it as a coin worthy of targeted searching in circulation and mint rolls. The variety displays very strong extra thickness and strong notching on LIBERTY and the date, accompanied by light extra thickness on WE TRUST — a graduated intensity pattern indicating the hub displacement was strongest in the zone encompassing LIBERTY and the date while diminishing toward the motto. Die markers include a die crack running northwest from the bridge of Lincoln's nose into the forehead on the obverse, and a die crack with two small die chips on the top left edge of the shield on the reverse. The triple cross-reference across CONECA (Class VI obverse), Cherrypickers (FS-01), and Wexler systems underscores the variety's acceptance across all major attribution authorities. The 2014 cent was struck in copper-plated zinc composition at 2.5 grams, 19 mm diameter, with a plain edge at the Philadelphia Mint. Lyndall Bass's Shield reverse features the Union Shield motif, and the obverse retains Victor David Brenner's iconic Lincoln portrait introduced in 1909. The strong notching on LIBERTY makes this variety detectable under low magnification.
