Description
This 2014 yellow bronze medal at 76mm honors the 65th Infantry Regiment in the larger display format. The Borinqueneers' Korean War service included the defense of the Pusan Perimeter, the Inchon landing, and fierce fighting in the freezing mountains of North Korea. The regiment suffered heavy casualties, and over 740 Purple Hearts were awarded to its soldiers. Puerto Rican soldiers had served in the U.S. military since World War I, but the 65th Infantry's Korean War service was their most significant combat deployment. The artistic quality of American medals has evolved significantly over time, from the competent but sometimes crude products of early die cutters to the sophisticated sculptural compositions of modern medalists. This large-format medal provides a fitting tribute to these Hispanic soldiers who served their country with valor.
