(1777) Bronze Medal J-MI-2, Gilt, Gates at Saratoga
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
The circa 1777 gilt bronze military medal cataloged as Julian MI-2 honors Major General Horatio Gates for his decisive victory at the Battle of Saratoga in October 1777, widely regarded as the turning point of the American Revolution. Gates's defeat of British General John Burgoyne's invasion force from Canada convinced France to enter the war as an American ally, transforming what had been a colonial rebellion into a global conflict that ultimately secured American independence. The obverse features a portrait of Gates in military dress. The reverse depicts allegorical or battle imagery commemorating the Saratoga victory. The gilt finish β gold applied over bronze β creates a luxurious appearance that approximates the original gold presentation medal authorized by Congress. The gilding process involves applying thin gold leaf or gold amalgam to the bronze surface. The Battle of Saratoga actually comprised two engagements: the Battle of Freeman's Farm on September 19 and the Battle of Bemis Heights on October 7, 1777. Burgoyne's subsequent surrender of his entire army on October 17 was the first time a major British force had capitulated to American troops, providing the diplomatic leverage Benjamin Franklin needed to secure the Franco-American alliance signed in February 1778.
Rarity Notes
Gilt bronze examples are scarcer than standard bronze restrikes. The gilding adds a premium finish that was produced in limited quantities.
