Description

The circa 1777 bronze modern restrike of the military medal cataloged as Julian MI-2 honors Major General Horatio Gates for his victory at the Battle of Saratoga. This restrike was produced at a later date using original or replacement dies to satisfy collector demand for this historically significant Revolutionary War medal. The obverse reproduces the portrait of Gates in military dress, and the reverse carries the commemorative imagery celebrating the Saratoga campaign. Modern restrikes are identifiable through differences in surface quality, metal color, and edge characteristics compared to period-original strikes. The Gates at Saratoga medal holds exceptional historical importance as it commemorates the battle that brought France into the American Revolution. Without French military and financial support, the outcome of the war would have been far less certain. The original gold medal was authorized by a resolution of the Continental Congress on November 4, 1777, just weeks after Burgoyne's surrender, reflecting the immediate recognition of the battle's strategic significance.

Rarity Notes

Modern restrike produced in quantities sufficient for general collector demand. More affordable and available than original-era bronze strikes.
