Description
This 2014 bronze medal at 38mm honors the U.S. Army 65th Infantry Regiment, known as the "Borinqueneers," the only all-Hispanic segregated unit in the United States Army during the Korean War. Composed primarily of Puerto Rican soldiers, the 65th Infantry Regiment served with distinction in Korea, fighting in multiple major engagements including the Battle of Outpost Kelly. Despite facing language barriers and discrimination, the Borinqueneers earned numerous decorations for valor. The production of commemorative medals in America spans from colonial-era pieces struck in European workshops to modern issues produced with twenty-first century digital design technology and advanced minting equipment. Congress awarded the regiment the Congressional Gold Medal in 2014, recognizing their service and sacrifice in defending a nation that did not always treat them as equals.
