Description
The 2012 (S) Chaco Culture National Park Quarter is a quarter produced at the San Francisco Mint as part of the America the Beautiful Quarters 2010-2021 series. The U.S. Mint produced 1.4 million examples, making this ranked 2nd of 16 mint variants by mintage, with less than 1% of production. The obverse features George Washington facing left, based on a 1786 bust by Jean-Antoine Houdon and the reverse displays unique designs featuring national parks and sites from each state and territory. The reverse offers a view of two elevated kivas from the Chetro Ketl complex with the north wall and canyon wall beyond. Chaco Culture preserves ruins of a major center of Ancestral Puebloan civilization that flourished between 850 and 1250 AD. El Yunque (PR), Chaco Culture (NM), Acadia (ME), Hawai'i Volcanoes (HI), and Denali (AK) were featured. El Yunque marked the first U.S. territory site in the program. Struck at the San Francisco Mint, established during the California Gold Rush and now primarily producing proof and collector coins. Estimated market value ranges from $0 to $10 depending on grade and condition. Struck in 75% copper, 25% nickel over a pure copper center, weighing 5.67 grams, 24.3 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #514348.
