Description
The 2009 (S) Proof Jefferson Nickel is a proof nickel struck at the San Francisco Mint, part of the Jefferson Nickels Return to Monticello 2006 to Date series. The U.S. Mint produced 2.2 million examples, making this the higher-mintage of the two mint variants, representing 3% of production. The obverse features Thomas Jefferson facing forward in a three-quarter view, the first forward-facing portrait on a U.S. circulating coin and the reverse displays Monticello in a refined depiction. A modern issue from an era of rotating coin designs, collector-focused programs, and renewed interest in numismatic artistry. As a proof issue, this coin was struck multiple times on specially prepared polished planchets using polished dies, producing mirror-like fields and frosted design elements prized by collectors. Struck at the San Francisco Mint, established during the California Gold Rush and now primarily producing proof and collector coins. Estimated market value is approximately $5. Struck in 75% copper, 25% nickel, weighing 5 grams, 21.2 mm in diameter, with a plain edge. Cataloged as PCGS #407262.
