PC-100c-2009P-01 Pre-Cud
Error
Description
Sharing the same catalog number as its Position B counterpart, this Position A specimen of the 2009 Philadelphia William Henry Harrison Dollar pre-cud raises an intriguing question: why does the same pre-cud pattern appear across both edge-lettering orientations? Presidential Dollar edge lettering was applied by a separate collar die after the obverse and reverse were struck, meaning the pre-cud — a rim fracture on the obverse or reverse die — exists independently of the edge lettering process. The presence of PC-100c-2009P-01 in both positions suggests the same die was used across production runs that included both collar orientations, with the rim crack appearing regardless of which edge-lettering collar was employed. Pre-cuds represent die cracks at an early stage where the rim section is cracked but not yet detached, producing a raised ridge rather than a featureless mass. William Henry Harrison's dollar, honoring the president whose single month in office made him a historical footnote, carries this die variety across both die positions. Cataloged by Cuds on Coins, this Position A entry documents the variety's presence in the alternate edge orientation.
