2009 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-002
Error
Description
Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 2009-P $1 SF JT WDDR-002 (Sacagawea/Jefferson Type), this Presidential Dollar displays doubling on the right arm of the Statue of Liberty just above the sleeve of the robe — a localized but diagnostically clear manifestation of hub doubling within the reverse design depicting the Statue of Liberty. The obverse carries multiple die markers: light die scratches running from southwest to northeast in the field to the left of the upper head, a short die scratch running southwest to northeast in the field to the right of the chin, and a short die scratch running northwest to southeast in the field to the right of the nose. The reverse exhibits a die crack running across the top of the lower three fingers on the left hand, documenting progressive die deterioration that provides a secondary attribution point. No additional cross-references to other cataloging systems are currently known. The 2009 Presidential Dollars continued the program authorized by the Presidential $1 Coin Act of 2005, featuring rotating obverse portraits of U.S. presidents. The common reverse, designed by Don Everhart, depicts the Statue of Liberty — and it is within this Liberty design that the arm doubling of WDDR-002 is observed. Presidential Dollars were struck in manganese-brass clad composition with a distinctive golden color, weighing 8.1 grams with a 26.5 mm diameter and edge-lettered inscriptions including the date, mintmark, and E PLURIBUS UNUM. The 2009-P Philadelphia Mint issue saw reduced production as the Mint adjusted output levels due to declining public demand for dollar coins in commerce. The localized nature of the doubling — confined to the arm area above the sleeve — illustrates how hub displacement geometry can produce visible doubling in some design areas while leaving adjacent elements unaffected.
