Description

Attributed by the Wexler Team as 2009-P 25-cent SF MP WDDR-001, this doubled die reverse on a Northern Mariana Islands Quarter shows doubling on the tip of the right palm leaf on the large palm tree — positioned to the right of the latte stone and SSW of the tip of the lower wing of the larger white fairy tern. Obverse die markers include a die gouge north of the R in QUARTER, a die crack through the upper designer's initials, a pre-die crack depression on the front tip of the base of the bust, and a die crack running NE from the eyebrow. Reverse markers include a die gouge south of the third A in MARIANA, a die crack extending ENE from the top back tip of the sail, and a small die gouge between the tops of the 2 and 0 in 2009. The Northern Mariana Islands Quarter was part of the 2009 DC and U.S. Territories Quarter program, which produced six designs that year. As the first documented doubled die reverse for this territorial issue, WDDR-001 establishes the baseline entry for collectors pursuing varieties on this distinctive Pacific Islands design.
