2008 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-010

Description

Carrying Position A edge lettering from the Denver Mint, this WDDR-010 on the 2008 John Quincy Adams Presidential Dollar presents the same ray-and-arm intersection doubling found on its Position B siblings. Position A denotes the orientation where the edge inscription reads normally when the coin is rotated with the obverse facing toward the viewer — the opposite of Position B. This edge-lettering distinction is unique to Presidential Dollars, whose incused edge text was applied in a separate striking operation after the obverse and reverse were impressed. The obverse die gouge between the upper 8 and 2 in 1829 and the reverse dot-gouge west of the dollar sign remain consistent across all four mint-and-position combinations, as these markers originated on the hub rather than individual dies. Denver's Position A specimens represent one quarter of the total WDDR-010 population, and collectors pursuing the complete set seek all four permutations to document the variety's full scope across mints and edge orientations.
