2008 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-003

Description

Carrying Position A edge lettering, this variant of the 2008 Andrew Jackson Presidential Dollar WDDR-003 features the edge inscriptions oriented so they read normally when the obverse faces upward. The reverse doubling shows slight spread on the right arm of the Statue of Liberty just above the sleeve of the robe and at the intersection where the second ray clockwise from the head meets the right arm. Position A edge lettering became an important distinction for Presidential Dollar collectors after the U.S. Mint began applying edge inscriptions as a separate manufacturing step. The obverse portrays Andrew Jackson, who served as the seventh President from 1829 to 1837. Obverse die markers include a die gouge northwest of the P in PRESIDENT and a small die gouge to the right of the bottom of the 8 in 1829. The Wexler designation is 2008-P $1 AJ WDDR-003. Position A and Position B pieces were produced in roughly equal numbers, though variety collectors track each orientation separately as distinct catalog entries.
