Description

This 38mm bronze medal honors the Muscogee (Creek) Nation Code Talkers, members of one of the largest and most historically significant Native American nations, who used the Muscogee language for military communications. The Muscogee Nation, headquartered in Okmulgee, Oklahoma, is the successor to the powerful Creek Confederacy that once dominated the southeastern United States. Muscogee code talkers brought their Muskogean language — with its complex verb system and agglutinative grammar — to the military's communication security effort. The obverse features a design honoring the Muscogee code talkers with cultural imagery reflecting the Nation's heritage as one of the "Five Civilized Tribes" whose forced removal to Indian Territory on the Trail of Tears in the 1830s is one of the most tragic episodes in American history. Despite this history, Muscogee citizens have consistently served in the U.S. military at rates exceeding the national average, and the code talker program represents one chapter in this ongoing tradition of service. The Muscogee language's Muskogean family connections, shared with Choctaw, Chickasaw, and Seminole, nonetheless maintained enough distinctiveness to serve as an effective code language. The reverse carries Code Talkers program inscriptions. The Muscogee Nation's code talker recognition acknowledges the contributions of southeastern tribal peoples to the war effort, alongside the better-known programs of southwestern and Plains tribes.
