Description

This three-inch bronze medal honors Dr. Michael E. DeBakey, the pioneering cardiovascular surgeon who transformed the treatment of heart disease in the twentieth century. DeBakey performed the first successful coronary artery bypass surgery, developed the first artificial heart, and invented the roller pump that made open-heart surgery possible. His innovations at the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas, saved countless lives and established the field of modern cardiovascular surgery. Congress awarded DeBakey the Congressional Gold Medal in recognition of his lifetime of achievement in medicine. The three-inch bronze duplicate reproduces the original gold medal design, making it accessible to collectors and admirers of DeBakey's extraordinary medical legacy. He continued operating into his nineties, demonstrating the same dedication that defined his entire career.
