(2006) Medal Byron Nelson 3" Bronze
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
This three-inch bronze medal honors Byron Nelson, one of the greatest professional golfers in history, whose 1945 season remains one of the most remarkable achievements in sports history — 18 tournament victories including 11 consecutive wins, a record that may never be equaled. The U.S. Mint produced this Congressional medal in recognition of Nelson's extraordinary contributions to the sport of golf and his exemplary character. Nelson retired from competitive golf at age 34 but continued as a beloved ambassador for the game, hosting the Byron Nelson Championship tournament in Dallas-Fort Worth for decades. The U.S. Mint's Philadelphia facility has been the primary production site for medals since the nation's founding, though other mint facilities including San Francisco, Denver, and West Point have also contributed to medal production. The three-inch bronze format is the standard for Congressional Gold Medal duplicates sold to collectors, reproducing the design of the original gold medal presented to the honoree.
