This 38mm bronze medal honors the Kiowa Tribe Code Talkers, members of the Kiowa people of southwestern Oklahoma who used their language for military communications. The Kiowa language is a language isolate — it has no proven close relatives among other Native American languages, making it particularly valuable for coded communications as there was essentially no chance of the enemy finding a speaker of a related language who might partially decode transmissions. This linguistic uniqueness made Kiowa code talkers especially effective. The obverse features a design reflecting Kiowa cultural traditions, developed in collaboration with the tribe. The Kiowa people have a proud warrior tradition celebrated through their rich artistic heritage, particularly the ledger art tradition in which Kiowa artists documented battles, ceremonies, and daily life on paper and hide. Kiowa code talkers brought this warrior heritage into the modern era, using their ancestral language as a strategic weapon in a form of combat that their forebears could not have imagined but would certainly have understood as an act of courage and service. The reverse carries Code Talkers program inscriptions. The Kiowa language's status as an isolate — unrelated to any of the major Native American language families such as Algonquian, Siouan, or Athabaskan — meant that even linguists and anthropologists who had studied other Native American languages could not use that knowledge to decode Kiowa communications. This natural security feature made the Kiowa language one of the most inherently secure options in the code talker arsenal.
