Description
The 2008 (D) Satin Finish Sacagawea Dollar is a special strike dollar struck at the Denver Mint, part of the Sacagawea & Native American Dollars 2000 to Date series. The U.S. Mint produced 745,464 examples, making this the lowest mintage among 5 mint variants, representing only 10% of total production. The obverse features Sacagawea carrying her infant son Jean Baptiste Crapeau on her back and the reverse displays rotating designs honoring Native American contributions to the United States. The reverse depicts a soaring bald eagle encircled by 17 stars. This is the final year of the original Sacagawea dollar design before the reverse changed annually starting in 2009 for the Native American Dollar series. A modern issue from an era of rotating coin designs, collector-focused programs, and renewed interest in numismatic artistry. Struck at the Denver Mint, established in 1906 from an earlier assay office that processed Colorado gold rush metal. Auction record: $134 SP69 03-31-2012 eBay. Struck in 88.5% copper, 6% zinc, 3.5% manganese and 2% nickel, weighing 8.1 grams, 26.5 mm in diameter, with a plain edge. Cataloged as PCGS #394946.
