The 2008 (D) Presidential Dollar - James Monroe, Position B represents a Denver Mint issue from the Presidential Dollars 2007 to Date series. The U.S. Mint's figure of 60.2 million covers every 2008-D James Monroe dollar, whichever way the edge lettering ran; how many are Position B coins is not recorded. The obverse features rotating portraits of each U.S. president in order of service, released four per year and the reverse displays the Statue of Liberty. The fifth President (1817–1825), James Monroe presided over the "Era of Good Feelings," a period of national unity and economic growth following the War of 1812. He is best remembered for the Monroe Doctrine of 1823, which declared the Western Hemisphere closed to further European colonization. The second year honored Monroe, John Quincy Adams, Jackson, and Van Buren. Mounting complaints about edge lettering legibility led Congress to move "In God We Trust" to the obverse starting in 2009. Coined at Denver's facility, which transitioned from processing Colorado gold rush metal to full-scale coin production in 1906. Struck in 88.5% copper, 6% zinc, 3.5% manganese and 2% nickel, weighing 8.1 grams, 26.5 mm in diameter, with a lettered edge. Cataloged as PCGS #394656.
