The 2008 (D) Presidential Dollar - James Monroe, Position B is a dollar produced at the Denver Mint as part of the Presidential Dollars 2007 to Date series. The U.S. Mint produced 60.2 million examples, making this ranked 9th of 21 mint variants by mintage, with 5% of production. The obverse features rotating portraits of each U.S. president in order of service, released four per year and the reverse displays the Statue of Liberty. The fifth President (1817–1825), James Monroe presided over the "Era of Good Feelings," a period of national unity and economic growth following the War of 1812. He is best remembered for the Monroe Doctrine of 1823, which declared the Western Hemisphere closed to further European colonization. The second year honored Monroe, John Quincy Adams, Jackson, and Van Buren. Mounting complaints about edge lettering legibility led Congress to move "In God We Trust" to the obverse starting in 2009. Struck at the Denver Mint, established in 1906 from an earlier assay office that processed Colorado gold rush metal. Estimated market value ranges from $1 to $5 depending on grade and condition.
