Description
This three-inch bronze medal honors Edward William Brooke III, who in 1966 became the first African American elected to the United States Senate by popular vote, representing Massachusetts. Brooke served two terms as a moderate Republican senator, championing fair housing legislation, civil rights, and the Equal Rights Amendment. His election broke a barrier that had stood since Reconstruction, when two African Americans served in the Senate by appointment of state legislatures rather than popular election. Congress awarded Brooke the Congressional Gold Medal in recognition of his historic achievement and his dedicated public service. The three-inch bronze duplicate reproduces the gold medal design for collector distribution. Brooke's legacy extends beyond politics — as a veteran of World War II who served in the segregated Army, he understood both the promise and the contradictions of American democracy.
