2006 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-004
Error
Description
Cross-referenced as FS-101 in the Cherry Pickers' Guide, the 2006 DDO-004 Lincoln Memorial Cent exhibits extra strong doubling that manifests as a clearly separated earlobe and duplicated lower beard on Lincoln's portrait. The separated earlobe — where the doubled impression creates a visible gap between primary and secondary ear detail — has become a signature diagnostic, making it one of the more visually accessible doubled dies in the modern Lincoln Cent series. Die markers under UVC-2503 and DMR-005 reveal progressive deterioration across three stages: early die state with clean surfaces, an early-to-mid state showing a die chip on column one of the Memorial and a die crack on column two, and late die state (unconfirmed). These reverse markers provide secondary confirmation when obverse doubling alone is ambiguous. Struck at Philadelphia on copper-plated zinc planchets, the 2006 cent was among the final issues of Frank Gasparro's Lincoln Memorial reverse before the 2009 bicentennial designs and 2010 Union Shield. VarietyVista documented DDO-004 with full die stage tracking.
