Description

Notching on LIBERTY combined with extra thickness on Lincoln's beard provides the primary diagnostics for DDO-002 on the 2006 Philadelphia Mint Lincoln Memorial Cent. The LIBERTY notching, where hub displacement created squared-off separation along letter strokes, is concentrated in the motto area, while the beard thickening adds a portrait-area diagnostic that extends the doubling's footprint across two distinct design zones. Cataloged as UVC-2501 and DMR-003, die stage progression documents three stages: Stage A represents an early die state. Stage B reaches mid-die-state. Stage C shows late die state characteristics. The beard detail, with its fine engraved lines radiating from Lincoln's chin, displays hub doubling as added bulk where the secondary impression reinforces and slightly offsets the primary engraving. The Lincoln Memorial Cent, in its penultimate full year of production before the 2009 design change, provides the canvas for this variety. The dual diagnostic zones of LIBERTY notching and beard thickening give collectors two independent pickup areas for confirming this doubled die obverse on the 2006 cent.
