Description

The 2006 (D) South Dakota State Quarter, struck at the Denver Mint, is part of the State Quarters 1999-2008 collection. The Denver Mint struck 265,800,000 South Dakota quarters dated 2006. The obverse features George Washington facing left, based on a 1786 bust by Jean-Antoine Houdon and the reverse displays unique designs representing each of the 50 U.S. states, released in the order the states ratified the Constitution or joined the Union. The reverse features a Chinese ring-necked pheasant in flight above the Mount Rushmore National Memorial, bordered by heads of wheat. The design pairs South Dakota's most famous landmark with the state bird. The 2006 quarters honored, in release order, Nevada, Nebraska, Colorado, North Dakota, and South Dakota. Coined at Denver's facility, which transitioned from processing Colorado gold rush metal to full-scale coin production in 1906. Estimated market value ranges from $0.25 to $3 depending on grade and condition. Struck in 75% copper, 25% nickel, weighing 5.67 grams, 24.3 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge.
