Description

The 2006 (D) South Dakota Satin Finish State Quarter is a special strike quarter struck at the Denver Mint, part of the State Quarters 1999-2008 series. The U.S. Mint produced 847,361 examples, making this the lowest mintage among 30 mint variants, representing only less than 1% of total production. The obverse features George Washington facing left, based on a 1786 bust by Jean-Antoine Houdon and the reverse displays unique designs representing each of the 50 U.S. states, released in the order of statehood ratification. The reverse features a Chinese ring-necked pheasant in flight above the Mount Rushmore National Memorial, bordered by heads of wheat. The design pairs South Dakota's most famous landmark with the state bird. Nevada, Nebraska, Colorado, North Dakota, and South Dakota. Struck at the Denver Mint, established in 1906 from an earlier assay office that processed Colorado gold rush metal. Auction record: $75 SP69 10-30-2020 eBay. Struck in 75% copper, 25% nickel, weighing 5.67 grams, 24.3 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #839029.
